General CommentI just wanna say to all of you who are pontificating about Depeche Mode's view of religion and Martin's religious beliefs: This song was written and recorded when Alan Wilder was a member of the band. Although he had just joined 2 years earlier, his influence on their musical style AND on the content of their lyrics was profound on Some Great Reward(which this song was the final track on). Even though Martin Gore is credited with writing this song, there is no doubt that Alan had something to do with the inspiration for it as Alan Wilder has been very open about the fact that he is a fervent Atheist and has always been extremely scornful or organized religion. Since his departure from Depeche Mode, the bands lyrics have become even more spiritual and overtly religious in the sense of mentioning God directly. One could argue that the spirituality found on SOFAB is what drove Alan to departure. I agree, Alan had a profound impact on the musical process of Depeche Mode, and he may have inspired this song (although I'd be surprised, given that there are other songs that are attributed to him, and this isn't one of them). But as far as your last statement, it was actually the process of recording SOFAD that drove him to departure, not the spiritual themes on the album. If you want to learn more about why he left, Google 'We Were Going to Live Together, Record Together And It Was Going to Be Wonderful.'
Very insightful.:-). General CommentDear Marcel Dwayne,It appears intellect is the one thing you sadly don't have. There are very few people who can rightly claim to be atheist. Those people are the ones who have read and understood Hawking's 'A Brief history of time.' Starlit adventures boss 64 full.
Until then we'll file you under agnostic shall we?It appears that you didn't research Christianity very broadly at all. There are certainly some churches who prey off emotion but the many I've involved myself with over the years are all about logical realities and what not. Stop painting pictures of Christians as ignorant people who act soley on, and are slaves to, their emotions.I look at this song as a way of attempting to understand the age old question 'Why do bad things happen to good person.' and reverse - why do good things happen to bad people. The girl attempting suicide can be seen as 'bad' from the standpoint that she was bored with life, an entirely selfish reason to want to kill yourself. Yet somehow she's saved. Rock on to a few years later and she's turned her life around, accepted God and is viewed as a 'good' person, yet her life is cut short then. There's no clear and easy answer for it and I think everyone has their ideas, the lyrics in this song being one of those. And Marcel Dwayne, you can no more prove God doesn't exist than I can prove he does.
It's a catch-22 I'll admit but just because you don't believe in God doesn't mean others can't, and your opinion on this matter makes you no better or worse than anyone else. Whatever their opinion may be.
I just registered on this site just to tell you how arrogant you are in this posting. First, you requirement of any Atheist to have read a book before not only is ridiculously similar to Christians asking every Christian to read the Bible, but is also against any known definition of the word 'Atheist', against all historicians describing Atheists before Hawking, and against the self-description of this person. If this person says he/she is an Atheist, then she/he is an Atheist, and you should accept it and not try to defy his very own self-definition, the less without the support of any scholar sources. And when you speak about yourself, you should not say 'WE' ('we will file you under'). You first paragraph is incredibly arrogant and shows a high amount of ignorance. Learn and grow up.
General CommentThis song is very powerful to many and has much emotion and is going to have many many different opinions and arguments. But what we all really need to understand is no body is entirely correct and we can't go around arguing over unanswered questions and uncertain things, faith or no faith, we're all right and wrong. But anyways, if there was, a 'God' that did control this whole universal system somehow (man or energy) Why blame him or it for our reckless driving and our hateful desires and our own faults as humans together. WE cause war, hate, crime, death, love. The only finger i can point at is all of us together.
Trying to prove each other wrong, and believe youre own self is the ultimate correct way. Not every body is this way, I know this, but many.
Besides i think people shouldnt take the bible too too seariously, i know that sounds silly to firm believers but we all make mistakes anyways, I dont thikn God punishes nor 'takes' someone life away, the way they describe it in some bibles, i think. It's all very condemning. Now i dont know what i'm trying to prove, Ah i know. Communication and acceptance. And Listening to others, and accepting there own world, ofcourse if its unharmful.
Ah just enjoy your freedom. Enjoy your dreams. Have faith in most anything. Depeche Mode has some cool songs.
